Storm surge has taken away the shoreline along Lola Road on Cedar Island, North Carolina. The deep cutback is now starting to threaten the adjacent roadway. Saltwater incursion has killed several trees, most that have disappeared into the sound.
Shorelines are a dynamic environment. They expand and shrink as nature's fury and processes take their toll. Sometimes humans intervene by building jetties, seawalls or through sand restoration efforts. In other cases natural cycles are allowed to function.
Cedar Island is located at the eastern end of Carteret County, also known as the Crystal Coast. This small fishing village is home to a NC Ferry Service terminal that transports passengers and vehicles to Okracoke Island, the gateway to the Outer Banks.の素材 [FY310191078399]
